Millbrook presents five-year plan to develop downtown

The Town of Millbrook has partnered with Downtown Strategies to develop a revitalization plan for the Main Street area.

The town of Millbrook is home to nearly 16,000 people and, like the surrounding towns, including Prattville and Wetumpka, have built their downtowns, Millbrook is also setting goals.

The city has partnered with a national community development company called Downtown Strategies. They presented a personalized five-year plan for a downtown on Wednesday to residents, business owners and city leaders.

The main goals are to make the city within walking distance and bring restaurants, events and shops to the area. Some possible projects that people might expect to see are new sidewalks, crosswalks, signage, and opportunities for new events.

Downtown Strategies believes that there has never been a better time than now for Millbrook to thrive, as more people are working from home and moving to smaller towns due to the pandemic.

However, not all Millbrook residents are on the same page.

“There are people who are really excited about the growth of Millbrook, but I think on the other hand there are people who have been here long before the town was incorporated and who may not like – not be the big things to come, “said a Millbrook resident. and business owner Penny Nichols.

Mayor Al Kelley said not everyone in the city would agree on all the goals, but these ideas will keep Millbrook moving forward.

“I hope that over the next few years this will be something everyone will be proud of,” Kelley said.

The plans are currently only recommendations as they have not yet been adopted by city council.
